Lincoln
successfully led the Nation out of the Civil War, preserving the Union
and ending slavery. In recognition of his role as President, an image of
Lincoln, designed by Victor D. Brenner, has been featured on the
one-cent coin since 1909, the 100th anniversary of Lincoln’s birth. The
first of the four new reverse designs represents the “Birthplace” of
President Lincoln, reflecting his birth and early childhood in LaRue
County, Kentucky. Named after his paternal grandfather, Abraham Lincoln
was born in a log cabin on February 12, 1809. The inscriptions
UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, E PLURIBUS UNUM, ONE CENT

also appear on the reverse. The obverse will continue to bear the
familiar likeness of President Lincoln currently on the one-cent coin.
